Getting advertising space on my website - what do I need to do ?

Well, you have to impress any potential advertiser with good selling points and tell them why it is important for them to be a part of it.

If you enjoy a decent quantity of visitors to your site, then you have something to work with. Then you have to identify your advertising market by researching your industry and who the big players are. You can then pitch your product to a number of small and large players, offering the same price structure for each. Depending on the feedback you get, this should enable you to identify serious people and also allow you to gauge what is the acceptable price for the formats you are selling.

One thing I will stress though. In todays web 2.0 environment, advertisers are looking for the next new wave of advertising formats and technology that is going to make a real difference to them. Not only do they need to justify the results to their bosses in real response terms, but they also need to show them that they have a grasp on the latest designs and then tell their colleagues why it is important to advertise with you.

I am not saying for one moment that banner ads, buttons, text ads and other formats are old and undesireable, but it is important to mix them up with new ideas before your competition does.

When you have the visitors and the design ideas to put to your advertisers, you then concentrate on finding them and pitching to them. If you have a website in a niche area, then you should already have a good idea of who your potential advertisers are.

What you should do now is place ads on set pages across the site and if you can't sell them, give them away for a very limited time. However, if you do this, make sure that you give away the space to companies you know really well and stress that it is very much on a testing and trial basis. Of course your other potential advertisers don't know that!
